Coiling
Compression springs are the kind that come to mind when most people try to picture a spring. These are open coil springs. They offer resistance to a compressive force. In other words they work in a “push” mode.
Their uses vary as much as the shapes and forms they come in — from engine valve springs to ball point pens.
Round wire is the most common material used to make this type of spring. Square, rectangular, or special shaped or sectioned wire is used in some cases.
Most of this type have the same diameter throughout the whole spring. These are known as straight coil springs.
There are also the kind where the diameter of the spring varies throughout its length. These type are tapered or cone-shaped springs.
Concave or convex forms are also used as well as a combination of both straight and tapered. I’ve also seen springs that have two straight sections made in two different diameters.
